……….. couple of months ago I started looking into UX as a hobby. One of the first things that you learn is that UX is not UI. (book: UX for Beginners: A Crash Course in 100 Short Lessons 1st Edition by Joel Marsh). So here’s my first post on UX.
When the washing machine started making beeping sounds. the first thing I wanted to do is to check the manual.
So the first thing I did, was go to AEG website and write there the model number that was written on the front of the washing machine
-> 14720
(an 6–7 years old washing machine with drier)
The result: 0!
but instead, they showed me some really fancy background video, and even asked me on how my experience was
Then I notice a “Download Manuals” button, hidden deep into the bottom menu,
and upon entering my product number
0 results again! WTF!!!!

Since AEG website failed I went to Google.
What you see below is a bunch of “MISLEADING” manuals websites, that when you click on them they show you a 2 page fake PDF, either ask for money so you can download the manual, or install some shady antivirus chrome extension
but after 5 minutes of digging I managed to find some links to the service manual, but hidden away in some old forums

From a technical point of view, it’s very easy to make a search on your website that will give your users a better UX. You have LOTS of tools that could help you manage it. The first thing that comes into my mind is Elasticsearch.
If you manage to make a background video, you can manage a search.

Now if I were an UX guy at AEG, I would start looking into what people are searching in the box and try to make them happy.
UNLESS….
unless you don’t want people to find easy information, so you can get money out of service. but that’s another story for another day
